5/24/2023 0 Comments Saga of the swamp thing 20Far from standard superhero fare, Saga of the Swamp Thing became thoughtful, contemplative, philosophical, and yes, horrifying. In many ways The Saga of the Swamp Thing is the godfather of the mature readers targeting Vertigo movement that swept the late 80’s and 90’s, perhaps unsurprising when you consider Watchmen writer Alan Moore was on the book for well over 40 issues.Īlongside artists like Stephen Bissette and John Totleben, Moore transformed Swamp Thing into the kind of critical darling publishers dream of today. There’s an intriguing dissonance between the simplicity of Swamp Thing’s creation (big ol’ fun bronze age horror monster created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson) and the character’s influence on the entire superhero comics medium.

Why destroy another woman’s marriage, why hatch a plot years in the making, and why murder? How was Nan O’Dea so intricately tied to those eleven mysterious days that Agatha Christie went missing? My Review London, 1925: In a world of townhomes and tennis matches, socialites and shooting parties, Miss Nan O’Dea became Archie Christie’s mistress, luring him away from his devoted and well-known wife, Agatha Christie. The greatest mystery wasn’t Agatha Christie’s disappearance in those eleven infamous days, it’s what she discovered. In retrospect, it’s frightening, but I daresay in the moment it feels sweet. It takes over your body so completely, it’s like a divine force, grabbing hold of your will, your limbs, your psyche. It’s a particular feeling, the urge to murder. “A long time ago, in another country, I nearly killed a woman. Nina de Gramont’s The Christie Affair is a beguiling novel of star-crossed lovers, heartbreak, revenge, and murder-and a brilliant re-imagination of one of the most talked-about unsolved mysteries of the twentieth century. Not quite: This was 1951. The neighbors burned the couple’s marriage license and the children’s baby pictures. A mob stormed the apartment and threw the family’s furniture out of a third-floor window as the crowds cheered below. The couple managed to get their furniture in, but as the day wore on, the crowds grew larger. housewives and grandmothers in swing coats and Mamie Eisenhower hats showed up to heckle them. On moving day, protesters would not let the family unload the police stopped the Clarks at the door. Problem was, the neighborhood was all white. They stood about the stern of the ship: and while they bargained for such wares as they fancied, the Phoenicians heartened each other to the deed, and rushed to take them. On the fifth or sixth day from their coming, their wares being now well-nigh all sold, there came to the sea shore among many other women the king’s daughter, whose name (according to Persians and Greeks alike) was Io, the daughter of Inachus. The Phoenicians then came, as I say, to Argos, and set out their cargo. Among other places to which they carried Egyptian and Assyrian merchandise, they came to Argos, which was about that time preeminent in every way among the people of what is now called Hellas. These (they say) came to our seas from the sea which is called Red, and having settled in the country which they still occupy, at once began to make long voyages. The Persian learned men say that the Phoenicians were the cause of the feud. What Herodotus the Halicarnassian has learnt by inquiry is here set forth: in order that so the memory of the past may not be blotted out from among men by time, and that great and marvellous deeds done by Greeks and foreigners and especially the reason why they warred against each other may not lack renown.
